I used to be the girl that was most comfortable with being friends with guys. Besides my girlfriends from high school and kindergarten, I would always struggle with finding female friends.
That shifted when I moved to a new country where making new friends was a necessity. Right there and then, I made a conscious choice to look at the reason building female friendships seemed to be so difficult for me. I discovered that I was often competing with women or feeling like I wasn’t on their level, which is never a healthy environment to start a friendship in.
Once I realised the problem was mine to solve, I made an effort to embrace female friendships and try my best to uplift and support the women around me whenever possible. All of a sudden, I found myself in a place surrounded by beautiful souls that uplifted and supported me in return. The female connections I have made since turned into some of the most delightful and gratifying friendships.
Women who inspire me to be the truest version of myself by being theirs has been the single most empowering thing I was fortunate enough to learn this year. Happy International Women’s Day
