For the past 3 months, boyfriend and I have been sleeping on the floor. Kawoosh! There it is. The secret is out.
Boyfriend is an absolute sportsfanatic who has had back issues for over 3 years now and we tried everything from medication to physiotherapy to ignoring it.
I came across this mind body green article that made a serious case for sleeping in the floor and because boyfriend and I love trying out unconventional things, we jumped right on the bandwagon.
I have slept on the floor before, for the 2 weeks of my final exams in high school, for no particular reason other than that it felt good to sleep on the cold stone floor and it was rather an instinctual decision but the idea of making this a permanent thing never even crossed my mind.
How we went about it
The first night, we decided to sleep in the living room. There was no particular reason for the room choice except for the fact that it was exciting and that way, we could look out to our balcony and watch the stars while falling asleep.
We were equipped with 2 Blankets and one duvet for the floor, 3 pillows each- one for the head, one for inbetween the legs and one for under our hips if we wanted to sleep on the side.
I can’t tell if it was the excitement of trying out something new or if it really was this great, but we both slept really well on our first night and the next day boyfriend already started to plan what we could do with the extra spare room if we got rid of our bed.
One thing boyfriend noticed was that sleeping on the floor, made him wake up with his back less stiff. He usually needs a few minutes to strech and bend before he can start his morning but with sleeping on the floor, for some reason, this problem disappeared.
I also felt more rested and I really like the simplicity of sleeping on the floor.
After a week of sleeping on the floor we made the decision to sell our bed permanently and sold our mattrace on the same day.
Funnily enough, the thing that bothered me in the beginning wasn’t the fact that we slept on the floor, it was the fact that it was very alternative and I found myself caring about what people might think when they came to visit us.
Isn’t it funny that while living Zero Waste and trying eating healthy, this was the one thing I was self concious about?
We decided to continue sleeping on the floor but I was in need for a little bit of a steady sleeping arrangement, which is why we will be trying out japanese futon mats that would lend a bit more support, some style and also a bit of comfort to our sleeping arrangement.
I’ll keep you posted 🙂
