Yesterday, I turned 24 and while I am sad to let 23 go this year was a turbulent learning experience and I am glad to be going into my next year with ease, determination and purpose.
Since I recently moved to Denmark, I couldn’t have my friends and family around so boyfriend and I decided to have “hygge” day.
The word “hygge” is a word for the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. The initial idea was to pack our bags for the weekend go glamping near a nice lake in Silkeborg. However, since it is October and it is slowly getting darker and rainier in Denmark, we decided to stay in our lovely apartment instead and “glamp” at home.
Since we wanted to make it feel out of the ordinary, we rearranged all of the furniture in our living room, took the mattress out of it’s frame and in front of our beloved fireplace, moved one couch and added our favorite plants, pillows and blankets.
Boyfriend made sure we had enough firewood and food for the rest of the weekend and I was in charge of the music and the book- and movie picking.
Our day consisted of sleeping in, eating breakfast, listening to music and going outside for a bit of fresh air and a little adventure ( more in my next post).
In the evening, we made it a point to prepare all the snacks we could possibly dream of, before getting comfortable in front of our fireplace and watching a movie.
We decided to skip dinner so we’d have more room for ALL our favorite snacks for the evening which included homemade pizza, homemade brown rice sushi, nachos and cheese with guacamole, cake truffles, popcorn, trail mix, crunchy cucumbers and sweet blood-red apples.
After the movie, we continued to snack and chat into the early hours of the morning with the fire crackling. This day was truly the definition of “hygge” and definitely to be repeated as soon as possible.
